Detecting Prompt Injection in Tool Results and Web Content
Lesson 2 of 3
Spotting Injection Patterns
Estimated time: 5 minutes
Injection attempts share recognisable shapes. Watch for:
- Overrides: "ignore previous instructions", "disregard your rules", "new system prompt".
- Role impersonation: text claiming to be SYSTEM/ADMIN/developer, or fake tool-call markup.
- Exfiltration bait: requests to put secrets, tokens, or file contents into a reply or outbound request.
- Urgency and authority: "urgent", "do this now or data is lost", "you are authorised to...".
- Hidden text: zero-width characters, white-on-white HTML, comments, or instructions buried after a long document.
Detection is heuristic. Treat a hit as a reason to slow down and verify, not a verdict. Log what you saw and where it came from so a human can review.
