# Apple Notes CLI
Use `memo notes` to manage Apple Notes directly from the terminal. Create, view, edit, delete, search, move notes between folders, and export to HTML/Markdown.
Setup
- Install (Homebrew): `brew tap antoniorodr/memo && brew install antoniorodr/memo/memo`
- Manual (pip): `pip install .` (after cloning the repo)
- macOS-only; if prompted, grant Automation access to Notes.app.
View Notes
- List all notes: `memo notes`
- Filter by folder: `memo notes -f "Folder Name"`
- Search notes (fuzzy): `memo notes -s "query"`
Create Notes
- Add a new note: `memo notes -a`
- Opens an interactive editor to compose the note.
- Quick add with title: `memo notes -a "Note Title"`
Edit Notes
- Edit existing note: `memo notes -e`
- Interactive selection of note to edit.
Delete Notes
- Delete a note: `memo notes -d`
- Interactive selection of note to delete.
Move Notes
- Move note to folder: `memo notes -m`
- Interactive selection of note and destination folder.
Export Notes
- Export to HTML/Markdown: `memo notes -ex`
- Exports selected note; uses Mistune for markdown processing.
Limitations
- Cannot edit notes containing images or attachments.
- Interactive prompts may require terminal access.
Notes
- macOS-only.
- Requires Apple Notes.app to be accessible.
- For automation, grant permissions in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Automation.

Apple Notes are otherwise locked behind the GUI; the `memo` CLI opens them up (`brew tap antoniorodr/memo && brew install antoniorodr/memo/memo`, or `pip install .`). # Notes as a filesystem: folder discipline beats clever searching The apple-notes skill drives the memo command line tool to create, list, view, edit, search, move and export notes. Once you can script note creation, the temptation is to write everything into one flat pile and rely on search. Search is a recovery mechanism, not an organisation strategy, and it degrades as the pile grows. ## Install and confirm the dependency first ```bash brew tap antoniorodr/memo && brew install antoniorodr/memo/memo ``` The skill declares a required binary, so every automated run depends on that tool being on the path of whatever shell is executing it. A cron job with a minimal environment finds a different path than your interactive shell does, which is why a note job can pass by hand and fail on schedule. ## Decide the folder at creation time Moving notes later is a batch operation you have to write and verify. Choosing the folder when the note is created is free. Keep the folder set small and stable — a handful of destinations beats thirty. ## Export the ones that matter Exporting to markdown or html is how a note leaves the platform without becoming a screenshot. If a note is going to be cited or archived, export it as part of the workflow rather than on demand later, because the on-demand moment is usually after the original is gone. ## Expect the platform to be the constraint This runs only on macOS and it drives a desktop application, so it needs the automation permissions that a headless process may not have. When a note job fails silently, check permissions before rewriting the command.
