Apple Calendar reads and writes from the shell

Lists calendars, shows events for relative or absolute dates, adds events with optional end times, notes and all-day flags, and searches titles over the coming month. Reads are handled by a fast external reader while writes go through system automation, which is why the tool needs that reader installed through a package manager plus whatever permissions the automation layer demands on a Mac. None of it works off Apple hardware. The bundled example calendar names belong to one particular machine and will not match another installation. Event creation defaults are sensible, though anyone relying on them should set them explicitly.

Use case: Adding a work event from the terminal

A small command line front end for local calendars

List the calendars first, because write commands default to a single calendar name.
The command set has no edit or delete, so a mistake means a manual fix in the calendar app.
Pass a calendar name whenever a work event should not land in the personal calendar.
Search only looks a fixed window ahead, so older events cannot be found this way.
Use the week view for planning and the day view for a quick answer.

Calctl reads and writes events in the calendar application on a mac, using a fast reader for listings and the system scripting layer for writes. It is a compact tool with a handful of commands, aimed at quick questions about the day rather than calendar management at scale. ## What it does - Lists the calendars available on the machine. - Shows events for a named period such as today, tomorrow or a week. - Filters a listing down to one named calendar. - Adds an event with a date, a start time, an optional end time and notes. - Searches event titles over the next month. ## When it is the wrong choice It is bound to one operating system and to the local calendar store, so there is no remote account it can read and no way to use it from a linux box. Listings depend on a separate reader tool installed through the package manager, and writes go through the system scripting layer, which means both prerequisites have to be present before anything works. Editing and deleting are not part of the command set at all, so it is a listing and creating tool rather than a full client. The search window is also fixed to the near future, so anything historical is simply out of reach. The calendars it can act on are whatever is configured on the machine, so a shared or delegated calendar has to already exist locally before it can be listed or written to. ```bash calctl calendars calctl show today calctl search "meeting" ``` ## Working notes - Requires the reader package installed through the system package manager. - Calendar names are the ones already present on the machine. - Writes default to one specific calendar unless another is named.
