Bounding Subagent Delegation Depth

An agent that can spawn subagents can also spawn subagents that spawn more subagents. Without an explicit depth limit this fan-out grows without bound: latency and cost multiply, a single flaky subtask can be retried at every level, and two agents can even delegate to each other in a cycle. This skill covers bounding delegation depth: keep a maximum spawn depth in the orchestration layer, block delegation once a leaf is reached, stamp each task with an ancestor chain to detect cycles, and choose a limit low enough to stay affordable but high enough that decomposition still works.

Commands

$ hermes config set delegation.max_spawn_depth 1
$ hermes config set delegation.orchestrator_enabled false

Depth Limits and Cycle Detection for Recursive Delegation

Bounding Subagent Delegation Depth

# Depth Limits and Cycle Detection for Recursive Delegation Delegation is the easiest way to blow up an agent's cost and latency, because a spawn is itself a decision the child can repeat. A parent that spawns three children, each of which spawns three more, has thirteen agents running before anyon
