Change a Shape in Two Deployments

A shape shared between an agent and its callers cannot be changed in one step, because the moment the writer uses the new shape the readers that have not moved yet are reading something they do not understand. Expand and contract splits the change across two deployments with a period in between. First the shape is expanded so both the old and the new form are accepted and written; once every reader and writer is on the expanded version, the old form is removed. This skill covers the sequence for agent tools and stored records: expand before you switch, backfill what is already stored, switch the readers, and only then contract away the old form.

Commands

$ openclaw command add --name "expand-shape" --trigger "/expand" --source "Ops Console" --message "Add the new form beside the old one so both are accepted and written, and keep the old form readable until every reader and writer has moved across."
$ openclaw alert-rule add --name "Old Form Still Read" --group-by "consumer" --window "1h" --action "Alert when a reader still asks for the old form after the switch window, which points at a contract step taken before every reader had moved."
$ openclaw auto-fix add --name "Hold Contraction" --condition "old_form.readers > 0" --action "Keep the old form readable and stop the removal step, rather than contracting while a reader still depends on the old shape." --approval "auto" --notify "#ops-info" --cooldown "2h"
$ openclaw runbook add --name "Expand Then Contract" --trigger "/runbook migrate" --tags "development, data" --steps "Expand the shape so both forms are accepted. Backfill the records already stored. Switch the readers to the new form. Confirm no reader wants the old form. Contract the old form away only then."

Change a Shape in Two Deployments

A shape shared between an agent and its callers cannot move in a single step. The moment the writer uses the new form, the readers that have not moved are reading something they do not understand, and the failure shows up far from the change. Expand and contract puts a period between the two halves
