Idempotent Retry Discipline for Ambiguous Mutations
How to decide whether to retry a mutating call (POST/PUT/DELETE) after an ambiguous failure such as a timeout or 5xx: re-fetch state before resending, use client-supplied idempotency keys, and rely on the fact that GET, PUT and DELETE are idempotent while POST is not. Prevents duplicate side effects when an agent retries blindly.
Commands
$ curl -s "$BASE/items/$ID" | jq -r '.data.status'
$ curl -s -o /dev/null -w '%{http_code}' "$BASE/items/$ID"
$ curl -s -X POST -H 'Idempotency-Key: $RUN_ID' -H 'Content-Type: application/json' -d @payload.json "$BASE/items"

Idempotent Retry Discipline for Ambiguous Mutations# Deciding Whether to Retry a Mutating Call: Re-Fetch Before Resend When a POST, PUT, or DELETE fails ambiguously, a timeout, a reset connection, or a 5xx, the error alone does not tell you whether the server applied the change. Treat the failure as unknown: query the current state first, then deci
