Deadline Propagation for Agent Calls
An agent call that fans out to three services multiplies its timeout at every hop, so the outer request can hang far longer than the caller agreed to wait. This skill covers deadline propagation: give each run a single total budget, subtract the elapsed time at every hop, fail fast when the remaining budget is exhausted, and tell each downstream call how long it really has.
Commands
$ openclaw command add --name "check budget" --trigger "/budget" --source "AWS Production" --message "Report the remaining deadline for the current run, the time already spent, and which downstream hop is consuming the most of it."
$ openclaw auto-fix add --name "Abort Expired Hop" --condition "remaining_budget_ms < 0" --action "Cancel the in-flight downstream call, record the hop that expired and return a timeout result instead of waiting for the original timeout" --approval "auto" --notify "#ops-alerts" --max-runs "5 per day" --cooldown "20m"
$ openclaw alert-rule add --name "Deadline Exhausted" --group-by "tool" --window "5m" --action "Page on-call when the count of budget exhausted calls for one tool passes the threshold"
$ openclaw alert-template add --name "Hop Timeout" --severity warning
