Bounding Verbose Tool Output Before It Enters Context

A tool call that returns a very large payload can consume a large share of an agent context window and crowd out the reasoning that depends on it. This skill covers bounding tool output before it is added to context: slice the payload to a fixed size, keep the head and tail with an elision marker, prefer a counting or filtering command when only a summary is needed, and pass explicit limits when a tool supports them. The goal is to keep every tool result small enough to reason over while retaining the signal the next step needs.

Commands

$ long-running-command | head -c 50000
$ long-running-command | tail -n 200
$ grep -c 'ERROR' service.log
$ sed -n '1,50p' report.txt
$ wc -l service.log
